| | Ezequiel PiR_GeSSLe | | | | 20 km away from downtown Buenos Aires I'm sitting next to my computer. On the CD-player there is an album: the singer --with a kinda funny voice-- sings a song in a strange language that makes me smile. Not Spanish, I can tell. Not English, either. Could it be German?. Russian?. Nope, it's Swedish. Swedish?. Swedish!. And what am I doing listening to this song in Swedish?. Who is this guy singing? What has he done to get so far from that little nordic country straight to my ears? What does my neighbour think about this song I'm playing loud? Did this guy ever dream or fantasy about how far this song would reach when he recorded it in the early '80s? I can't tell.
This guy's name is Per Håkan Gessle. To me it's only Per. To all of my friends it's "Roxette's male singer". Roxette, you know. "Hello, you fool, I love you!". "Na na na na na: She's got the look!". "It must have been love but it's over now ..." from Pretty Woman. And that beautiful song on the radio yesterday: "A thing about you". Touching. And amazingly it describes a situation a friend of mine is going thru right now. "This guy is a genius!" he keeps on telling me whenever we listen to those magic lyrics.
He really is a genius. After all these years listening to his music since a "Joyride" tape I still keep treasured got to my hands by chance back in 1991, every single song sounds like a masterpiece to me. Waking up with "Dangerous" or "Lies"; maybe feeling lonely and playing "Spending my time"; directing the orchestra with "Anyone" or dancing disco with "Stars", it's all about him. It all came from that man.
I managed to meet him once. I couldn't believe it. I was shocked. I wanted to tell him so many things, like how important his songs were to me, to many people. But time is never enough. Maybe, someday, I will tell him about that. Or maybe not. But from the bottom of my heart I want that man to be the happiest man in the world. Because a happy Gessle-song makes my days shine. Makes all of our's days shine. And so, in the name of all of us, the Roxette-fan community, I want to wish you Per the happiest birthday of all. Hope you spend a nice time with your wife Åsa and your son Gabriel, up there in the cold winter of Sweden. Meanwhile I will anonymously to you listen one more time to that swedish song. And thanks to you, I'll be smiling again.
